Happy Birthday to the Best Dog Ever!

Nikki had her first birthday yesterday. Not that she really knows what a birthday is. But that's okay, we still decided to spoil her a bit. She got a yummy can of "Lamb and Vegetables" dog food for breakfast and then in the evening she got to chew on a delicious cow rib (mmmm, good) and play tug-of-war with a brand new kong toy. She is already probably the most spoiled dog you will ever find (no shortage of dog toys strewn about the house and yard), but she really hasn't gotten any new or special treats or toys in a while (not even when we brought home this tiny person who has stolen all the attention) so she really appreciated the extra love. Of course, the tug-of-war toy must be kept out in the garage except when Andrew or myself can play with her with it, because when left unsupervised with it for all of 3 minutes she already started chewing through a bit of the fabric part (and this is sturdy double thickness seat-belt type fabric!).

All in all Nikki had a pretty good birthday. Of course, she is a pretty darn good dog so we think she deserved it. She helped us get through a very difficult year. True, she can be very frustrating at times when she gets into mischief in the yard (Nikki, no digging!) or is jealous of Gabs and nudging to play at the most inconvenient of times (Nikki, not now I'm nursing the baby!). But she also knows just how to look at you to melt your heart, and is the best snuggler when she knows you need a hug (or when feeling under the weather after a round of chemo). And all in all, she is really quite good with the baby - other than sometimes having to be reminded of the "no lick, she's very fragile" policy. She is often content to ignore Gabriella in favor of chewing on her bone. And someday we know that Gabs and Nik will be best friends.

So Happy Birthday to the Best Dog Ever...and may there be many more to come!
